Problems as Projects - Phase 1

This new term I want to study something that has been bothering me for a while. How valid is my pedagogy? How do I assume that Learning by Making is really good for everyone? Is all that I believe making does to a human, valid?

Making Thinking Visible  The Mind is constantly fulfilling two functions - gathering information and processing it. As much as these two actions seem to be different, they are happening in a union. Gathering information uses various perceptive skill, and rely on the use of senses. With time using senses to learn has been deemed of lower importance than cognition (processing), as we see gathering and processing as separate functions, with processing being of higher value.  In this context, I look at maps created for children. Maps are mandatory tools for navigation, they develop a sense of position, and identity with the surroundings. The maps I see around me that are created for children are created with one focus - processing large amounts of geographical information. A New Manifesto Emerges - Visual Leadership

It has been an exciting time putting my thoughts into visual formats, something I hesitated doing for the longest time. There were battles with the sense of perfection and what art should look like, which I have overcome finally! With Visual Leadership, I have immersed myself in making drawings that make me happy! Version 1 of my Manifesto looked like this. Manifesto Version 1 When I began working on Version 1 my ideas were merely disparate thoughts that outlined what my education/ leadership plan ought to be. I believed in many ideas that were largely participatory and inclusive, but it was missing crucial pieces. As the course unfolded new ideas emerged and strengthened my core beliefs. I used to think , Leadership was a far away space hidden in corporate boardrooms or in power corridors. Now I think , leadership is in the everyday actions of individuals. Through The Eyes Of Children!

I shared this map of India with 5 children (aged between 8- 13 years) and got them to annotate copies of the map. I have included here some of the top comments that came through.   Their comments just go to prove how iconography can alter the visual experience of a map. This map is a visual OD, but the kids just lapped it up and saw so much in it.  I chose a foreign language India map just to see how they react to the language of the map, the imagery was what was noticed most. They complained about lack of it too in many places, like the lack of forests and boundaries.  I concluded after this meeting that maps are visual stories. They are powerful visual aids that communicate.
